Surbiton area guide

Surbiton sits within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, located next to the River Thames. The present-day town came into existence after a plan to build a London-Southampton railway line through nearby Kingston was rejected by Kingston Council, who feared that it would be detrimental to the coaching trade.

Surbiton has become a highly sought after area due to its very fast transport links into Central London, whilst retaining the feel of a market town. Commuters are attracted by Surbiton’s pleasant riverside location, its green spaces, its fast trains into London and its convenient access to the M25 and A3.

Amenities

Surbiton has a thriving local community as well as some excellent amenities. From shopping to leisure, local residents find an array of facilities right on their doorstep. It has a prospering town centre in which small shops co-exist with high-street stores and supermarkets, and bar and café culture thrives alongside older pubs and restaurants. Fishponds Park, a nature conservation area with ponds and a stream, is a popular spot, sited in the former grounds of an 18th Century house. Visitors to Surbiton will not only enjoy their proximity to central London but the spread of attractions on the doorstep. The fabulous Hampton Court Palace is easily reached, and Kew Gardens and Richmond Park are also close by. Neighbouring Kingston, with its excellent shopping, vivid nightlife and Thames boat trips, is just a walk away, along the river.

As well as the usual array of supermarkets, boutiques, coffee shops and convenience stores, Surbiton has two art galleries, the Art House in Victoria Road and Thames Place on Brighton Road. There is a large sports and social club, as well as a local golf club. There is a thriving online local community at surbiton.com

Claremont Gardens offers a tranquil area of relaxation and contemplation but is situated just moments from the high street. On the morning of the third Saturday of every month the Farmer’s Market pops up on Maple Road. It’s always very popular and there are lots of very tasty, locally produced things to buy, such as cheese, pasties, bread, cakes, chutneys and meat.

Property

Surbiton offers a wide selection of residential housing for singles, couples and families alike. The housing is predominantly Victorian cottages and converted flats, Edwardian townhouses, and 1930’s semi detached homes. There are several new-build developments just off the high street. The “River Roads”, containing listed buildings and historic houses, form the priciest and most exclusive area of the town, together with the sought after Southborough Estate.
